David Muench was born on June 25, 1936 in Santa Barbara, California.  David’s father was a photographer so he was naturally inspired to follow in his footsteps.  According to David Muench his father, Josef Muench frequently went on trips to the sierras with his family and it was here that his life as he knows it began.  Initially David merely helped his father take his pictures and he would sometimes even be a model for some of his black and white pictures, soon enough David himself would start professionally taking his own professional photographs.  In the late 1950’s when he was still in high school David started publishing his own photographs on the front and back covers of Arizona Highways with a friend of his, Raymond Carlson as an editor.  David would move on to successfully earn a degree at both the Rochester institute of technology and the Los Angeles art center school of design, however he stated that nature was his true teacher over the years.

David would soon work for the Jefferson national expansion memorial.  While he was in St. Louis David photographed both large murals and small pictures that pay tribute to the Louis and Clark expedition.  David also works for the world heritage sites for UNESCO and Panasonic, David is most famous however for his extensive landscape photography.  David’s photographs of nature cover all of the elements as well as all different kinds of biomes and environments, everything from deserts to valley’s to volcanoes and to mountains,  His nature photographs are so renowned he has published over 50 exhibit format books.  The main theme of David’s photographs is the power of nature, which is why his photographs often focus primarily on one element like earth, sand ,water, fire, and sky, he has even taken wonder photographs of his home town of Santa Barbara.

It seems like art and photography is a trait that is very common in David’s family.  David’s wife Bonnie Muench is not only a painter but is also a photographer herself, sporting a gallery of her own works of art and art in nature.  David’s son Marc Muench is a renowned landscape photographer who works with his father and by himself to capture stunning images of landscape and nature, Marc also worked on Catalina island for a year creating a video project that highlights the islands wildlife for the sake of conservation.  One can presume that one day Marc will take up the family mantle of the primary photographer.  David still works to capture stunning visuals of nature and the environment and he frequently post his works on his website and in his books.
